The Wind Rises (2013)

Kaze tachinu

Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Stars: Hideaki Anno, Hidetoshi Nishijima, Miori Takimoto

A look at the life of Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed Japanese fighter planes during World War II.

It is unlike the first few Miyazaki films I’ve watched, which are rather feel-good movies. This one’s a drama, and could be dragging perhaps, but I still enjoyed it.

This is probably my life mantra.

Kill Your Darlings (2013)

kill your darlings

Director: John Krokidas
Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, Michael C. Hall

A murder in 1944 draws together the great poets of the beat generation: Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs.

Something’s missing with the plot. Obsession was supposed to be the oil that will keep the story running, but I don’t think it was stressed in the movie enough. Nonetheless, brilliant actors.

Persepolis (2007)

Directors: Vincent Paronnaud, Marjane Satrapi
Stars: Chiara Mastroianni, Catherine Deneuve, Gena Rowlands

Poignant coming-of-age story of a precocious and outspoken young Iranian girl that begins during the Islamic Revolution.

I love it! Well, I loved the graphic novel more (read my review), but the film version is good as well. I credit it to Marjane Satrapi’s very colorful life. I never knew her before reading the book, and now I look up to her. 🙂
