The Great Raid (2005)

Director: John Dahl
Stars: Benjamin Bratt, Joseph Fiennes, James Franco

Taking place towards the end of WWII, 500 American Soldiers have been entrapped in a camp for 3 years. Beginning to give up hope they will ever be rescued, a group of Rangers goes on a dangerous mission to try and save them.

Set in the World War II Philippines, although I believe the scenes weren’t shot in the country, except, of course, for the real footage of the events.

If the narration was true, Philippines, known as the Pearl of the Orient, was indeed a wonderful place back then. A place where people from various countries go for business. The depiction of the Philippines also aligns with how the country was described in History books. Too bad it has to become what it is now.

Anyway, about the film, it was Hurt Locker-like although it’s missing some thrilling effect. It’s a good film though, great actors.
